What is KINMUN Conference

KINMUN (Kinshasa Model United Nations) conference is a two-day simulation of the United Nations for secondary school students, which takes place at the end of April at The American School of Kinshasa. KINMUN welcomes schools and students located in Kinshasa to participate and engage in discussions to promote sustainability and renewability in DRC. The first day of the conference will be an optional delegate training course to prepare students to participate in the two-day simulation.

About

KINMUN (Kinshasa Model United Nations) conference is a two-day simulation of the United Nations for secondary school students, which takes place at the end of April at The American School of Kinshasa. KINMUN welcomes schools and students located in Kinshasa to participate and engage in discussions to promote sustainability and renewability in DRC. This is primarily intended as a beginner conference to teach students the basics of MUN. However, we will also have an advanced committee option for students with prior MUN experience.

With a peacekeeping mission, 21 programs, funds, and specialized agencies working with the Congolese government to stabilize and strengthen the DRC while extending humanitarian aid to individuals in need, the UN has strong relations with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Since joining the UN in 1960, they have promoted human rights and development, produced employment and new economic endeavors, enhanced health, nutrition, education, and water access, managed natural resources sustainably, protected people, upheld human rights, and decreased tensions and conflicts.

Participants in the conference have the exciting chance to advance their language, leadership, and communication abilities to levels that are formally recognized via KINMUN. To improve their experience at KINMUN, students engage in all of the related activities, including authoring resolutions, lobbying, and debating, as well as formulating ideas and engaging in debate with other students.

Mission of KINMUN

The KINMUN objective is to promote initiatives for sovereignty and sustainability through cooperation and debates on a range of international topics that uphold the notions of ensuring a high standard of living for DRC inhabitants.

The goal of participants of KINMUN conferences is to seek answers to the myriad issues left unresolved in DRC via discussion, negotiation, and debate. Youth delegates will speak out on issues including human rights, environmental preservation, economic growth, disarmament, and issues affecting young people and refugees.

The involvement and interaction with so many other young students from Kinshasa schools will be part of the research and preparation needed to enable the flow of understanding and knowledge through the acceptance of views and attitudes different from their own. This will give them a profound comprehension of worldwide challenges, increase their awareness of the causative factors of international conflict, and assist them in coming to understand the underlying motives and interests of others.

KIMNUM strives to achieve the objectives set forth by the United Nations in the Preamble to the Charter of the United Nations through its conferences:

“…to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours”

Code of Conduct

GENERAL BEHAVIOR

Although KINMUN is an educational exercise intended for young students, delegates are simulating the Councils of the United Nations. Thus, for the period of the conference, they must be regarded as diplomats and ambassadors for the country they are representing, as well as representatives of their individual schools. This demands a high standard of personal conduct and behavior from all delegates, during the conference sessions.

It is extremely important for the continuing good relations between schools and delegates at KINMUN, and the diplomatic and business communities that delegates always behave appropriately. Therefore, schools are expected to select their students carefully and not bring any student who is likely to create a disciplinary problem. This is important not only for the good name of KINMUN but also for the good name of the school concerned. School Administrators and MUN-Directors should be aware that attendance at the session of KINMUN is by invitation and that this invitation may be withheld from schools unable to ensure that their students conform to accepted standards of adult behavior.

MUN-DIRECTOR’S RESPONSIBILITIES AND CONDUCT

All students must be accompanied by, and are the responsibility of, the designated MUN Director(s). A MUN- Director must be a teacher at the school, or at one of the schools from which the delegation comes.

At least one MUN Director per school is expected to be always present at KINMUN. MUN-Directors must ensure that their students are present in their designated forums. MUN-Directors are also required to adhere to the dress code (see below).

DRESS CODE

Formal dress, i.e., the kind of clothes that real UN diplomats might be expected to wear when attending UN sessions, is required at all meetings. In order not to cause offense to other delegates, national dress, military uniforms, and armbands are forbidden.

CONDUCT AT TASOK

Delegates and teachers must be always courteous to the TASOK staff and to the KINMUN Organizational and Administrative Staff, most of whom are volunteers giving up many hours of their own time to serve the delegates.

Smoking is prohibited in TASOK and alcoholic drinks may not be consumed while the conference is in session.

TOBACCO, ALCOHOL, AND DRUGS

Smoking and/or the consumption of alcoholic drinks are not allowed at TASOK.

The use of any narcotic drug is expressively prohibited.
