GOAL

The purpose of The American School of Kinshasa’s extracurricular programs are to provide all students with a wide range of opportunities to be involved in school-sponsored activities outside of the school day. A focus on diversity and inclusion helps us to provide the most relevant opportunities for our students, and we constantly strive to improve the quality and number of activities offered.

After School Activities

Participating in a production, whether it is an individual or team effort, offers a unique sense of belonging for the student and the opportunity to create strong bonds and a sense of community with their peers. Being involved in a production helps students build character and confidence by being constantly challenged in a supportive and encouraging environment. Through the development of core skills and executing them in a performance, students feel a sense of accomplishment when participating.

Good attitudes and teamwork are the foundation of any performing arts program. Students will work as a team to help and encourage one another in every learning opportunity presented to them and rehearse and perform with passion and integrity. Students will learn to take responsibility for their actions and make the right decisions, no matter the situation or level of stress.

Participating in activities is an important aspect in many students’ lives. TASOK aims to develop the whole child (emotionally, socially, and physically) by providing a safe environment for the students to learn and develop various skills. Advisors & Directors will ensure this safe environment exists by providing effective leadership which uses positive encouragement, constructive criticism, and modeling the behaviors we wish to instill in our students.

ASA Trimester 1: August 19 – November 8 (11 weeks)

Athletics

Participating in a sport, whether it is an individual or team sport, offers a unique sense of belonging for the athlete and the opportunity to create strong bonds and a sense of community with their peers. Being on a team helps students build character and confidence by being constantly challenged in a supportive and encouraging environment. Through the development of core skills and executing them in a game situation or competition, students feel a sense of accomplishment when participating and competing on a sports team.

Good sportsmanship and teamwork are the foundation of any sports program. Our athletes will train and compete with a high level of respect for their teammates, their opponents, the coaches, and the officials. TASOK coaches will teach our athletes how to lose graciously and win humbly. They will work as a team to help and encourage one another in every learning opportunity presented to them and play with passion and integrity. Athletes will learn to take responsibility for their actions and make the right decisions, no matter the outcome of the game.

TASOK believes that offering a wide range of competitive sports adds value to the educational experience of the participants. Emphasis is placed on participation, sportsmanship, and the development of skills. Coaches are both role models and teachers for athletes, fostering positive attitudes, teamwork, and respect for rules.

Season 1 (August 19 – November 8): Volleyball, Cross-Country & Swimming

Season 2 (November 11 – February 14): Basketball 

  • Tryouts: November 11 –  15

Season 3 (February 24 – May 23): Football

Performing Arts

At TASOK, the Performing Arts program offers a vibrant and inspiring environment for students to explore their artistic passions. Whether it’s acting, singing, dancing, or stagecraft, our program encourages students to take creative risks, develop new skills, and discover their unique voice. Each student is welcomed into a supportive community that values collaboration, creativity, and dedication to the craft of performance.

Our productions are led by experienced teachers who are great directors and who nurture students’ talents while helping them grow both artistically and personally. The program focuses on creativity, teamwork, and the refinement of performance techniques. Students not only learn the skills needed for the stage but also develop discipline, self-confidence, and a deeper appreciation for the performing arts.

One of the unique aspects of TASOK’s Performing Arts program is the opportunity for students to collaborate with both local and international theater practitioners, artists, and resource people. Through these interactions, students gain fresh perspectives, learn industry-standard techniques, and deepen their understanding of global theater practices. These experiences bridge the gap between classroom learning and the professional world, offering students a rich blend of mentorship, creativity, and cultural exchange.

TASOK is proud to offer a diverse range of performance opportunities throughout the year, including plays, musicals, and performance showcases. These productions allow students to experience the excitement of being part of a theatrical production, from the initial auditions to the final curtain call.

Rehearsals are a vital part of the preparation process and take place after school from 3:20 – 5:30 p.m, with additional Saturday sessions added as the performance dates approach.             

Local and International Competitions

Local competition and games are organized with local schools throughout the season. Whenever possible, we encourage our teams to travel to local schools to play “away” games. A season-ending tournament/competition is hosted at TASOK with local and international schools participating.

All Varsity teams have the opportunity to participate in an international tournament. Whenever possible we compete in the SAISA league.
