CHILD PROTECTION - SAFE RECRUITMENT PRACTICES

The TASOK Child Protection Policy and Procedure works for the child, for the family, and for our community.  Research indicates that international communities are as prone to child abuse as communities in their home country.  Child abuse is a multi-faceted issue that involves dynamics of the child, the family, and the community.  The TASOK Child Protection Policy works to respond at all three levels.

The American School of Kinshasa

TASOK Board Child Protection Policy (taken from the TASOK Board Policy Manual)

Child abuse and neglect are concerns throughout the world.  Child abuse and neglect are violations of a child’s human rights and are obstacles to the child’s education as well as to their physical, emotional, and spiritual development.  The American School of Kinshasa endorses the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, of which our host country, The Democratic Republic of Congo is a signatory.

Schools fill a special institutional role in society as protectors of children.  Schools need to ensure that all children in their care are afforded a safe and secure environment in which to grow and develop, both at school and away.  Educators, having the opportunity to observe and interact with children over time, are in a unique position to identify children who are in need of help and protection.  As such, educators have a professional and ethical obligation to identify children who are in need of help and protection and to take steps to ensure that the child and family avail themselves of the services needed to remedy any situation that constitutes child abuse or neglect.

All staff employed at The American School of Kinshasa must report incidents of child abuse or neglect whenever the staff member has reasonable cause to believe that a child has suffered or is at significant risk of suffering abuse or neglect.  Reporting and follow up of all suspected incidents of child abuse or neglect will proceed in accordance with the administrative regulations respective to this policy.  Furthermore, cases of suspected child abuse or neglect may be reported to the appropriate employer, to the respective consulate in Kinshasa, to the appropriate child protection agency in the home country, and/or to local authorities.

The American School of Kinshasa seeks to be a safe haven for students who may be experiencing abuse or neglect in any aspect of their lives.  As such, The American School of Kinshasa will distribute this policy annually to all parents and applicants, will communicate this policy to students, will provide training for all staff, and will make every effort to implement hiring practices to ensure the safety of children.  In the case of a staff member reported as an alleged offender, The American School of Kinshasa will conduct a full investigation following a carefully designed course of due process, keeping the safety of the child at the highest priority.

LIVING IN KINSHASA

Mbote – Welcome to Kinshasa and TASOK

Set in a charming campus environment in the heart of the DRC, TASOK is a warm, caring and learning-focused community on a beautiful forested 42-acre space. TASOK was founded in 1961 by the missionary and US Embassy communities to provide an American education to expatriate families living in Kinshasa. TASOK is accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges, is a member of the Council of International Schools and is sponsored by the US State Department Office of Overseas Schools. TASOK became a fully authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School in April 2021, authorized to offer all three IB Programs; Primary Years Program (PYP), Middle Years Program (MYP), and Diploma Program (DP). IB World Schools share a common philosophy- a commitment to high-quality, challenging, international education- that we believe is important for our students. Additionally, TASOK recently completed MSA recertification, placing the school on a trajectory of success!

The context of TASOK allows us to carefully consider how we connect with the natural environment and engage with service learning – both aspects of our curriculum that have the potential to provide our students with a unique learning experience developing skills that they can transfer to their lives beyond TASOK in the global community. Creating an inclusive learning environment where students think critically, apply their learning in different contexts and where feedback is provided as a means of constructive growth and development are the ultimate goal of our program.

Kinshasa, the second-largest Francophone city in the world, is a bustling environment with a rich art and music scene. Today’s enrollment of 340 students represents sustained growth since 2004 as more NGO’s, business communities, and diplomatic missions realize the wonderful opportunities and potential that exist both in Kinshasa and the TASOK community.

The school has automatic 24/7 generator back-up for the entire campus, including residences. There is an emergency back-up water system in every building. The campus itself is one of the most beautiful places in Kinshasa, 42 acres of gardens and a developed Botanical Garden with sample species, an educational path system, and screened gazebo style outdoor classroom. Our campus has a large and highly visible bird population. Teachers’ day-to-day life is peaceful and comfortable.

TASOK is definitely a school where community is important. Teacher housing is apartments in duplexes or four-plex, completely at TASOK’s expense, including utilities. Housing is apart from the school, but teachers live in close proximity, so TASOK is a place where people are most content when they enjoy a relaxed, informal, open social life.

Kinshasa offers a surprisingly wide choice in food shopping and a variety of styles of stores and pricing. Orientation includes extensive experience in where and how to shop most happily for various preferences. Traffic means that driving is a hassle, but TASOK provides vehicles (all standard transmission with one automatic transmission) for teacher use with 50 km free per month and if you use more than this, there is a per kilometer rental fee or you can  pool your km’s with other teachers. Kinshasa is definitely not a “walking” sort of city for expatriates. It is quite a safe place but crowded, dusty, congested, and noisy.  There are places to walk/run along the Congo river.

Kinshasa has a world-class music scene with plenty of opportunity to hear some of the best music in Africa. There is an interesting art scene as well and a variety of local crafts. Restaurants are numerous and delicious, from tasty Congolese dishes to European cuisine comparable to far more developed countries. The campus residents often gather together both to go out and host events and dinners on campus.

TASOK CONTEXT – PAST, PRESENT, & LOOKING AHEAD

Set in a charming campus environment in the heart of the DRC, TASOK is a warm, caring and learning-focused community on a beautiful forested 42-acre space. TASOK was founded in 1961 by the missionary and US Embassy communities to provide an American education to expatriate families living in Kinshasa. Kinshasa, the second-largest Francophone city in the world, is a bustling environment with a rich art and music scene. While poverty is widespread in the DRC, including Kinshasa, and pockets of insecurity persist and tend to dominate news headlines, the vast majority of the DRC is stable and experiencing slow but steady economic growth since 2004. Despite troubled times in the DRC since the early 1990s, TASOK has remained open continuously, with only temporary closures. A current period of stability in the DRC has produced an influx of new students and a steady growth in the school’s population. At its peak, the school operated close to the campus capacity of 575 students in the 1980s. Today’s enrollment of 334 students represents slow, sustained growth since 2004.
